It’s been a crazy weekend here, so sorry for no post Friday. The kids are off for spring break for one more day and we’ve been busy cleaning out the house to make it ready for the baby. This has required sweet husband’s time as well since I can pack a box of things, but I’m not hauling it all out to the shed. The house is such that we are moving out every thing we can that we don’t use all the time (even my sewing stuff is going out for now) just to make some space for a cradle and baby gear. Moving is still a possibility, but that all takes time and good fortune, so we’re making do here in the meantime.
I’ve replanted the seeds that didn’t sprout in my Jiffy sprouter. Because the others are growing into regular plants now they don’t need the lid on, so for the re-try pellets (I had 12 that were growing nothing), I’m using ziplock sandwich bags to hold the moisture in. I put three pellets (newly planted and watered) in the bottom of a ziplock style sandwich bag and zipped the top almost closed. Kind of like this. They can sit in the window and try to sprout in their mini-greenhouse-environments while the other plants can grow without the lid on.
The chicks in their box in the shop weren’t all in the box a couple of days ago when the kids went to check the food and water. I guess they just wanted to see what was on the other side of the big box wall, so now the box has a mesh lid on it and the chicks are staying in. And the box has moved to the back porch. With the lid on it, it should be safe from any marauding neighbor cats. One of the chicks has damaged her leg somehow. Some kind of nerve thing I guess because she was able to move the leg some but not get it underneath her right or make the toes spread out. We pulled her out for a couple of days to see if it would improve, then decided she’s either going to make it or not, so she’s back in with the others. She’s actually getting around okay on it now even though it’s still not working exactly right. She kind of limps around, but she’s up and trying to be active. Maybe she’ll make it.
This past weekend has been wet here (finally). It snowed Saturday and rained Sunday. Today the sun is shining–this should make for some happy outside plants. Maybe my peas will grow after all! :) Have to love springtime–that renewal of life is such a miracle every year.
